Before joining SayoStudio, I created a 36-foot mural to adorn the exterior of the WoW. It visits school systems in the Southwest Florida area. The Wildlife on Wheels (WoW for short) is a mobile museum for kids. The Wildlife on Wheels (WoW) mobile classroom is a 36-foot-long interpretive trailer that travels to Title 1 schools, libraries, conservation-minded events, and economically challenged and underserved communities in the five-county area to teach about water quality, the ecosystem, wildlife, and other topics that meet the Refuge’s mission in a safe and inclusive environment. After completing my internship, the “Ding” Darling Wildlife Society commissioned me to create artwork for their brand new mobile educational classroom. Stepping off my soap box, I began to deeply care for the natural conservation of Florida. Ornithology Mural Art for “Wildlife on Wheels” Mobile Educational Classroom As climate change looms over us all, protecting native habitats is now more important than ever. Areas like Tampa now have virtually no mangrove estuaries, leaving them vulnerable to any direct hit from hurricanes. Mangroves that used to line Florida’s gulf coast have been nearly wiped out, thanks to demand for land and housing development on beachfront property. Florida just passed a law protecting the increasingly shrinking Florida Wildlife Corridor, which was a major win for wildlife across the state. Over time, I learned about how human actions have major impacts on our wildlife neighbors. Florida’s Wide Array of Animal and Plant Species is Astounding “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is a fantastic place to visit, and helped me embrace the world of nature conservation pertinent to Florida ecosystems. ![]() Sanibel Island was a place I visited many times during family vacations, and ultimately led me to become an art intern for the local wildlife refuge. Starting as a novice, I blossomed into a full-blown birder and amateur photographer. I’m a huge bird nerd! I have been ever since I started noticing the amazing range and diversity of wildlife in the mangrove estuaries of Sanibel Island, Florida. I want to share with you a bit of my background, and my love for Florida wildlife! My name’s May Jernigan, and I’m new to the SayoStudio team. My art is inspired by my love of ornithology. We invited K–12 students to create works in connection to, and inspired by, Canadian art and art history. In an unprecedented year the Art Canada Institute launched a creative challenge to reaffirm our mission: to inspire students from coast to coast with the work of this country’s artists and support its teachers in their heroic task of fostering our leaders to come. These questions were at the root of the Canadian Art Inspiration Contest. How do we cultivate the next generation of changemakers? What lessons can we learn from this country’s greatest visual artists? How do we creatively connect the past to thinking about the future? What role does art play in shaping the thought-leaders of tomorrow? ![]()
